Movie Review: Pixar’s Luca makes a summer splash on Disney+
Luca is a coming-of-age story that takes you back to your fond childhood memories of wanting the see the world and forging new friendships.
Luca (Jacob Tremblay) is a curious little sea monster who is interested in the human world, but forbidden by his parents from ever exploring above the surface. One day, he meets fellow sea monster Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer) who is more daring and pushes Luca, literally and figuratively, out of the water.
When Luca’s parents are about to send him into the deep, deep ocean, he decides to run away to a human town with Alberto. Together, they dream of buying a Vespa and seeing the world. They team up with Giulia (Emma Berman), the fishmonger’s daughter, to join a competition where the reward money will help them buy a Vespa.
It’s a simple, beautiful story set against a gorgeous backdrop of the seaside town of Portorosso. While the film isn’t one of Pixar’s best, there are fleeting moments that capture the soul of the film, making this entry a heartwarming, well-told film. The setting is gorgeous whether it’s the underwater sea life or the color-popping seaside town.
The film will make a splash this summer and keep the young ones entertained with visually stunning scenes of gelato, underwater worlds and skies full of stars. The desire to explore the world, go to school and bond with friends is a theme we can all relate to wholeheartedly — especially now in such drastic times.
This breezy trip to the seaside town is a refreshing summer family flick. Luca is now streaming on Disney+. ~Marriska Fernandes
